Road Department Truck Driver/Equipment Operator
I. Job Purpose:
The primary duty of this position is to preform road maintenance and preservation activities and road construction operations on County Accepted Maintained Roads. This position conducts inspections and maintenance activities for the following attributes: Bridges, Signs, Guardrail and Culverts along with tree trimming, debris removal and shoulder work. Under the direction of the Road Superintendent, this position also provides snow control and sanding operations as well as provides emergency response services and traffic control. Additionally, this position operates dump trucks, heavy equipment and performs manual labor for extended periods of time.
II. Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities:
- Perform manual labor assignments as needed including but not limited to cleaning ditches, culverts installation, cutting brush with hand tools, loads and hauls brush, removes dead animals along county roads, clears right-of-way of brush and other debris to improve visibility and diminish road hazards.
- Respond to emergencies as directed by Road Superintendent and perform tasks in the interest of public safety and property protection during emergencies. Notify the Road Superintendent of any conditions that require additional work or additional resources.
- Conduct inspections of roads, guardrail, bridge structures, culverts, signs, and other attributes within County Rights of Way. Report any identified and potential hazards, damaged and maintenance needs to the Road Superintendent.
- Provide traffic control for emergency response events such as motor vehicle accidents, flooding and removal of road hazards as directed by the Road Superintendent
- Provide snow control and sanding operations along County Accepted Maintained Roads
- Conduct maintenance activities in compliance with county, state and federal safety policies and practices.
- Follow all safety policies and procedures of the Road Department and Crook County
- Perform all other duties as assigned by the Road Superintendent as necessary during the course of the workday.
- Provide assistance to Office staff and Shop lead when requested.
- Performs manual tasks in application of asphalt patching and road surface repair; installs/repairs guardrails, fences, signposts and mailboxes.
- Operate the following types of equipment: dump trucks, lowboy truck, bucket trucks, forklifts, power brooms, vibratory rollers, wheel loader, motor grader, excavator, backhoe.
- Utilize specialized power-driven hand tools including chain saws, jackhammer and plate compactor.
- Prepare and Complete Daily Traffic Control Plans when needed.
- Perform Daily Site Inspection of work zones to determine location for sign set up.
- Perform traffic control and flagging activities as needed; including placing signs, barricades, traffic cones and other warning devices; duties may vary according to job assignment.
- Guide traffic within work zones, through and around construction and maintenance projects; performs a variety of manual tasks associated with road and bridge activities.
- Operate pickup and flatbed pickup (not requiring a commercial driver’s license), and miscellaneous tools in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures.
- Conduct daily equipment inspections according to County Standards.

- Knowledge of Federal, State and County requirements for road repair and maintenance.
- Knowledge of equipment involved in road maintenance and repair.
- Knowledge of road maintenance, preservation and construction activities.
- Ability to successfully complete projects under stressful and demanding deadlines with changing priorities and conditions.
- Knowledge of Federal Motor Carrier Regulations
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of traffic control and safety
- Ability to lift a minimum of 40 pounds.
- Ability to stoop, kneel and bend and be able to move fluently from one piece of equipment to another.
- Ability to effectively communicate using handheld radios.
- Ability to identify mechanical issues and safety concerns with commercial vehicles and equipment operations.
- Ability to recognize dangerous traffic situations and warn workers in sufficient time to avoid injury.
- Knowledge of the principles and practices of traffic control and safety
IV. Qualifications:
- Minimum of a High School Diploma or equivalent.
- Minimum 2 years’ experience with Truck Driving and Equipment operation
- Maintain a Valid Class A CDL for the State of Oregon
- Maintain a Valid ICC Medical Card
- Maintain a Oregon Traffic Control Certification
- Prior to or on date of hire:
- Able to complete a thorough employment and/or criminal history check.
- Able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug test.
