I.      Job Purpose:

This position is under the direct supervision of the Corrections Sergeant. This position performs a variety of administrative and technical support services in an assigned area within the jail. Assigned areas may include the control center and/or booking. Responsibilities include operating controls, visual monitoring of inmates, processing correspondence, entering data and records into computerized database systems and monitoring the activities of corrections staff. The work is performed in a combined work environment primarily in a variety of security settings in a 24 hour enclosed, secure facility. This position requires decisions to be made accurately relying on training, policy, procedure and experience. This position is responsible for duties that do not require certification by DPSST.

II.        Duties, Tasks and Responsibilities: 

  • Operate and control security doors inside and outside the jail facility.
  • Monitor safety and security equipment including alarms and camera monitors.
  • Operate radio, telephone and intercom to communicate with staff, visitors and inmates.
  • Plans, coordinates, documents and announces inmate activities.
  • Monitor the activity of corrections staff to maintain safety and security and call for back up when appropriate.
  • Use operational procedures and emergency checklists to contact and dispatch personnel for activated alarms or in emergency situations.
  • Monitor, inspect and keep inventory of emergency keys, radios and emergency equipment.
  • Ensure that equipment is in good repair and functional.
  • Create and maintain electronic and paper records.
  • Use computer software to retrieve criminal records and update booking records to reflect changes.
  • Update and maintain logs, criminal files, database records and other records with accuracy and handles information with confidentiality.
  • Prepares written reports, as requested, or as required by policy and procedure.
  • Take inventory of and enter the inmate’s personal property, including inspecting and storing personal clothing and property.
  • Communicates to law enforcement officers about inmate custody issues using Law Enforcement Data System (LEDS), radio or telephone.
  • Responds to inquiries from other agencies and the public.
  • Verifies and admits people to the secure areas of the jail.
  • Coordinates the flow of inmates with other corrections staff through the intake and release process.
  • May be required to testify in court proceedings or in grand jury.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

  • Ability to hear alarms, voice conversation, etc.
  • Ability to grip with hands and fingers.
  • Ability to bend, kneel, reach, twist, walk, run and stand for extended periods.
  • Must wear/use PPE when handling evidence or in any situation or where exposure to biohazard is likely.
  • Work effectively with angry, hostile or upset citizens or suspects.
  • Able to make effective and appropriate decisions under times of stress.
  • Cope with the physical effects of acute emotional personal stress (fear, anger, etc.).
  • Cope with the physical effects of acute emotional stress of others.
  • Ability and skill to use computer and work with Microsoft spreadsheets and word programs, as well as data management programs.

IV.      Qualifications: 

  • High School diploma or GED equivalent, some college preferred.
  • Minimum 21 years of age.
  • U.S. Citizen; or ability to obtain U.S. Citizenship within timeframe allowed. (OAR 259-008-0010)
  • Valid Oregon driver’s license by time of appointment.
  • No criminal record or extensive traffic violation record.
  • Successfully complete 6 month probationary period.
  • Must hold or be able to obtain LEDS Certification.
  • Must be able to obtain a CJIS Security Clearance.
  • Prior to or on date of hire:
    • Able to complete a thorough employment and/or criminal history check.
    • Able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug test.
    • Final candidates will be required to provide official proof of college degree and certified transcripts (not required for all positions).

  • Position is part of the Collective Bargaining Agreement and members are subject to Association Dues.
